California Sweet Onions California sweet onions are grown in the central valley of California. This intermediate-day round onion matures early in the summer and offers one of the best domestic sweet onion options during this time period.
Peru Sweet Onions Peru sweet onions are grown 20 KM inland from the Pacific Ocean in predominately desert to near-desert conditions with snow-melt off the Andes Mountains irrigating the crops. Peru sweet onions are the closest to Vidalia® Sweet Onions in appearance and taste. Bland Farms has packing/shipping facilities located strategically throughout the U.S. to insure customers a freshly-packed product with significant logistical advantages.
Rocky Mountain Sweet® Onions Rocky Mountain Sweet® Onions are grown in north-central Colorado where the area’s fertile ground gives way to this increasingly popular onion. Available as conventional or organic, Rocky Mountain Sweet® Onions have become well-known for their pleasingly mild flavor and superior shelf life.
Tampico Sweet Onions Tampico Sweet onions are grown in the state of Tamaulipas in northern Mexico and are generally considered the first-available of the spring sweet onions in North America. These onions are yellow, short-day Grano types that offer great taste in spite of a substantially deeper bulb shape when compared to the Granex (Vidalia) type.
Texas “1015” Sweet Onions Texas “1015” Sweet Onions are produced in the lower Rio Grande Valley. While the 1015 variety may be the historic namesake of the Texas Sweet Onion, most of the sweet onion production from Texas is now an improvement on that variety. Texas Sweets are known for their use in deep-fried onion “blossoms.”
Vidalia® Sweet Onions According to Federal marketing order number 955, Vidalia® Sweet Onions must be grown in a specific 20-county region in southeastern Georgia to be sold under the Vidalia® trademark. These famous onions are the classic Granex shape, a hybrid between a round Grano type and a flat Excell (or Bermuda) type. They are yellow, short-day onions that are grown during the shortest days of the year and mature as day length and temperatures increase in the spring. Renowned for their mild, “sweet” flavor, Vidalia® Sweet Onions are widely regarded as being the preeminent sweet onion by aficionados everywhere.
